Rerad Lesson 10 and 12 in Student book.
Finish Story Sequence Chart and brainstorming if you didn't complete in class.
Rewrite the Boston Tea Party Story changing the characters and adding new details from history. Use checklist and be sure to add all required elements. Turn checklist in with story.

Review all vocabulary through Lesson 10. Quiz next week.

Next week we will be discussing assigned literature: Rip VanWinkle, Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Paul Revere's Ride by Longfellow. Be sure to have these read and be prepared to discuss in class.

September 28 Assignment

Lesson #4Student book. Do a key word outline for each paragraph, rewrite with dress-ups and sentence openers. Add strong verbs and sense words to increase imagery. Use the rough checklist to make sure you have included all required elements.



Lesson #6 Student Book. Using rough draft of Mayflower, add #2 sentence opener and add sense words, add vocab words.

Complete final draft in MLA format. Use indicators and mark dress-ups, openers etc. Use the checklist.



Study vocabulary 1-5 for a quiz next week.



Resource Notebook: Read pg 56. Complete pg 57, turn in next week.

Review vocabulary words from Lesson 1, 2, and 3. Quiz in class next week.

Lesson 3 Write a rough draft report based on key word outline done in class. (Follow rough draft checklist on page 21)

Lesson 5 Using rough draft, add in dress-ups and sentence openers discussed in class and listed on Final Checklist. Type, double space, underline dress-ups, indicate sentence openers in margin. Use checklist and turn in with final copy.

Next Literature Assignment: Begin reading Rip VanWinkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. (Longfellow assignment will be added) The readings are due to be completed by October 19.

Assignment: Read Lesson 2. (Follow directions under 'Assignment') Using the poem model on page 15 write 2 poems: 1 on Native Americans and 1 on European Explorers. Use page 16 for brainstorming strong verbs. Review checklist. Type final draft and turn in on September 14.

Continue vocabulary with Lesson 2 vocabulary at the back of the book.

Assignment for August 24, 2010

Read Introduction and Lesson 1.
Use the model on page 11 to write a poem about America. Use quality adjectives as we brainstormed together in class. Final draft must be typed as explained in class policy.
-- brainstorm for adjective ideas for the nouns on pg 10
-- Begin filling in the poem model. Remember that you can change things up. This is a model only.
-- Make a final copy typed and turn in with checklist. (bottom of pg 11)
--Cut out vocabulary words for Lesson 1, punch hole in corner and use string, book ring, etc. Memorize words.
--Begin reading "The Last of the Mochicans". Since you have 4 weeks to complete and there are 33 chapters, you should try to read at least 8 chapters a week. Remember to mark your book or make notes about the main characters, the setting, interesting quotes, symbols, etc.

Welcome to High School English. This year we will focus on helping the students learn techniques to improve composition skills. We will use IEW U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons, Vol.1. Part of our curriculum includes American Literature. The following books will be read in the 1st semester:
"The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper (finish by Sept. 14, 2010)
"Rip Van Winkle", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving and "Selected Works" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (finish by October 19, 2010)
"The House of Seven Gables" by Nathaniel Hawthorne (finish by Nov. 30, 2010)
"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain (finish by Jan. 4, 2010)

Assignments will by typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font and will include name, date, class in the header. They must be turned in on time. Homework assignments will be announced in class. I will do my best to keep assignments posted here in a timely manner.

Write draft with dress-ups and sentence openers.
Have someone edit for errors and improvements. (Make sure you read it out loud to catch errors.)

Study vocabulary and study guide on To Kill a Mockingbird for in-class test next week.

Write a 5 paragraph essay (Intro, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion). Use all the dress-ups, all the sentence openers and at least one decoration. Create a title from clincher sentence. Use Basic Essay Model. You can do it on spoons or pick a topic and turn in outline.

Review all Latin root words for test on Tuesday.

Turn in all missing assignments next week. Don't forget the second book report.
